How not to get theft when travelling
Well, I have experienced some tragic stories when I travel to some places. Maybe it happen because of lack of awareness during exploring a place. I will tell some short stories when I lost something.
1. Bali
Yes, That famous island. I lost my first blackberry here, to be exact in Beratan Lake when I travelled with my family. As a teenager, I just cried after that and not getting any new mobile phone from my parents for a year.
Mistake: Don't put your phone in your pocket when it is very crowded.
2. Berlin
Even I love Berlin so much. This city left me a sad story. I lost my wallet in Berlin Hauptbahnhof. The story begin when I arrived at Berlin Hbf, in that day I will going back to Binz. My friend ask me to take a lunch in Vapiano before we leave Berlin. Then, suddenly after we came out from S-Bahn and took an elevator my friend told me that my backpack is opened. So, I check my backpack and that's it my wallet is theft. I just shocked after that and my friend try to calm me down by accompany me to the Police Station and buy me a ticket to back home. When I arrived at my flat during 2-3 weeks I wrote e-mails to a Berlin Police staff, I tell her everything and what I lost. Luckily, my uni staff in Germany help me to make a new ATM card. After 3 weeks, I got an e-mail from her, she tell me that Berlin Police found my wallet and I can get my wallet in DB Lost and Found Office in Berlin. Another reason so I could travel to Berlin again. What makes me shock in that moment is I lost my Indonesia ATM Card, KTP, and my photoautomat. I don't even care about the amount of money I lost, it's the documents that make me sad.
Mistake: DO NOT EVER PUT YOUR WALLET IN THE FRONT SIDE OF YOUR BACKPACK.
3. Barcelona
ALMOST!
Nope, I don't lost anything here. I separated with my friends during our Euro-trip, they went to Milan while I went to Florence solo. My flight from Rome arrived in Barcelona almost midnight, I just bring a small cabin luggage and my favourite backpack. When I walking to looking my hostel around placa de la catalunya, then a woman approaching and grab me and ask if I was okay and lost any important things. Then, she pointed two men along with a man who already cuff them, she told me that two men are thefts.
Mistake: no mistake in here.
Learning from those experience. I make some points how not to get theft:
1. Buy a hidden waist bag
This kind of bag is very common for traveller and also it's cheap. You can find it in e-bay or tokopedia (Indonesia e-commerce). Just strap the bag behind your shirt. You can put your passport and money in here.
2. Put your important things in hidden pocket in your bag.
There must a pocket or secret place inside your backpacks or any kind of bags. Just don't put your important things in the front of your bags. Maybe you could save some coins and small change for emergency if you want to buy some street foods.
3. BE LIKE A LOCAL
TRUST ME. Just dress like a local, don't be a confuse tourist. Don't put too much effort or wrong costume when you are travelling, this things I often found when I travelling to another country, seriously, wearing a coat in Europe during summer ???
Also, just walk and strolling around like local people, don't show off... please, unless you are crazy rich.
Last, luck... don't be an idiot like me.
Thank you for reading peeps, 💟
