5 days in Sumba (part 1)
Did someone even read this blog ?
And yes, I have came back to Jakarta since August.
I don't know what kind of feeling until now. But,it makes me wants to travel more.
In the middle of October, I started looking for end-year trip. AND, I DECIDED TO GO TO SUMBA ISLAND.
Once again, I choose FUN ADVENTURE to arrange this trip. It will took 5 days to explore this island.
Where is Sumba ?
For someone who doesn't know where is this island i will show you the map. It located near Kupang. There is 2 small airport in here,
which are located in 2 opposite directions, one in Tambolaka (Southwest Sumba) and the other is in Waingapu (East Sumba). You can't expect a big airport in here or boeing to landing in here. Traveler only can use ATR airplane and there is no direct flight to here. Either you could transit in Denpasar (NAM air and Lion Air) and Kupang (Garuda Indonesia).
Weather ?
I came to Sumba on December. I thought it will be hot everyday since Sumba weather is getting impact on Australia weather. But it isn't on day 3 our group has to be waiting in a stall under Bukit Warinding because heavy rain. But, my tour guide said the best period to visit sumba is from April until July. Still, back to the days when I visit Sumba, when it doesn't rain it was very hot.
Culture ?
I will tell you all the knowledge I get based from my tour guide info. Sumba divide into 3 area (Kabupaten) which are West Sumba, Southwest Sumba, and East Sumba. In my opinion the East Sumba is showing more progress, traveler might see less traditional house and bigger public service since this part is growing longer than the opposite side. Southwest Sumba is the recent area that developed by government. In this area they got several ethnic group and there is many traditional house you will see when you are going to the tourist attraction. Some people in Sumba is still living with their believe from the culture or we know as Animism. But,the majority of them is Christian and Catholic. The people are working as a farmer or fisherman. They are living with low economy condition. Most of the children can't go to high school or college. They went to school until primary school or junior high school, after that they looking for job in Sumba or going outside the island such as Bali, Flores, or Java. When the dry season is coming, they have to buy the water from water truck because the water pump is dry. This is very sad also I really want to be very grateful since I can life with this condition.
Sumba is also very famous for their festival named PASOLA,this is an international horse riding festival that held between February and March. This festival is based on legend from the tribe in Sumba.
DAY 1
I almost missed my flight in Jakarta to Denpasar, because of this famous LCC, LION AIR. I don't know about the regulations that TRIPOD must put in the baggage, then I bring it to the boarding gate and the airport officer said that I have to put my tripod in the baggage. I run to the baggage service when I talked to the staff, he said that he only handle for Sumatra Area, then my flight already starting to boarding the soon, then I ran again to the boarding gate luckily the airport officer allow me to enter and bring my tripod and give it to the flight attendant as late baggage. I will telling you that most of Indonesian people already know about LION AIR flight record. Then, I got delayed for almost an hour without announcement for my next flight to Tambolaka.
After pick-up my tripod. My tour guide,Pak Patrys already waiting for us and there is 9 other people who also join the trip. Then, our car lead us to our first spot in Southwest Sumba, Ratenggaro Culture Village. This small village is located in the seashore. They got several traditional house and some horse too. Tips from me: don't give the kids money. I know it sounds a bit cruel, but if you give them money you will get trouble,my advice is give them candies from the car and make sure all the kids got the same candies.
Next, we went to a valley called Lendongara. The time i step into this valley is the time when i can literally breath. It is very quiet, you might also see Tambolaka from up here. Then,we are waiting for the sunset. And it is amazingly beautiful sunset moment. To close the day, i witness a rare moment when two boys were picking up their cow while playing, this moment isn't always comes up when you are living as an urban people.
DAY 2
We left very early from the hotel to go to the famous Saltwater Lake, Waekuri. It took 1 1/2 hours driving. The lake is surrounded
by coral cliff and a bridge where you can see the gradation blue ocean. This place is a must visit when you visit Sumba. I also tried jumping to the lake with local kids, really it need big courage. Who cares about getting burnt when you see a place like this.
Near Waekuri there is a hidden beach owned by a French man this beach soon will becoming a resort. It also beautiful without the lake. Tips from me : bring a local guide so they can negotiate the admission fee to enter Mandorak Beach.
Then,2 hours later we arrived in Bwana Beach. I have to trekking for 15 minutes. Just please be careful. But,overall it was worth the hike for me.
In this trip we always close the day with watching sunset. This second day,we are watching sunset at Pero Beach with other local people.
To be continued...
